Founded in 1987, TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) is a semiconductor foundry headquartered in Hsinchu, Taiwan. The foundry is the largest of its kind globally, producing more than 100,000 silicon wafers per month. It's part of a more comprehensive network of semiconductor companies known as the Taiwanese Semiconductor Industry , which is the world's largest, with $133.2 billion in 2011 revenues. If that's not impressive enough, TSMC's revenue in 2011 was more than 60 times larger than the global semiconductor industry's revenue in 1987—the company's first full year in business. TSMC was founded in 1987. The company was jointly owned by the Government of Taiwan, the Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association (a consortium of over 700 companies), and private investors.
